How the starter quiz works
At the start of a save the game asks eight personality questions, Mystery Dungeon style, and then suggests a partner. The suggestion is optional: you can decline it and choose any other starter. If you want a specific partner through the quiz anyway, the answers below get you there.
In plain terms: each answer adds points to personality traits, usually 2 to a main trait and 1 to a second one. Every starter has two traits. A starter's first trait counts double and its second counts once, the starter with the highest total wins, and exact ties are decided at random.

Answer letters follow the order the game shows them, so A is the first option. If the game ever reorders them, match by the wording below.

Things worth knowing
- Twins: Treecko and Froakie, and Piplup and Quaxly, have identical traits, so no answer set can separate them. Those four are always a coin flip between the pair.
- Chikorita is the hardest guaranteed result. Only one of the 65,536 possible answer sets reaches it with no tie.
- Most other starters have hundreds or thousands of winning combinations. The string shown is just one that works.
- You never need the quiz to get a partner, because you can refuse the suggestion. Browse all 29 starters instead.
